Figured bass A system developed during the Baroque period (1600-1750), that was a ‘short hand’ way of indicating intervals, alterations, and other indications for a keyboardist (organ, harpsichord) in ‘realizing’ an accompaniment for the Baroque orchestra. It is still in use today by teachers and in theory classes and texts, but not by musicians.
