Popular music  is music that has wide appeal for a general audience, as opposed to music appealing to a specialized audience such as Baroque opera, 20thcentury classical music, etc.  ‘Popular music’ in the Norton/Grove encyclopedia of music defines ‘popular music’ as music ‘of the populace…made by illiterate people’.  This has created a paradigm of unyielding prejudice regarding music created by composers in music other than the ‘acceptable’, ‘classical’ idiom. Jazz, however must be included in the ‘classical’, not the ‘popular’ field, and should be considered the natural outcome of the ‘Impressionist’ period.
