Diatonic (dia-tonic) two-tones. Intervals expressed as letters indicate that two tones must be different and adjacent; A-B, G-A, C-B, etc. A-Bb is diatonic whereas A-A# is chromatic. Bb-C# is diatonic and is the characteristic interval of the harmonic minor scale; an augmented 2nd. A caveat: due to enharmonic spellings, what is written may be different than what is played. For example, a ‘C’ dominant may be spelled ‘C-E-G-Bb’, or with an augmented 6th; ‘C-E-G-A#’. They are the same keys on the piano, and they sound the same, As a dominant in the key of ‘F’ both are diatonic because ‘A#’=’Bb’ on the piano. ‘A#’ is not diatonic to the key of ‘F’, ‘Bb’ is. Both spellings are used, mainly for ease of reading; ‘A’ vs ‘Bbb’, ‘E’ vs ‘Fb’, etc. (see JS Bach Kleine Praeludium #3 from the group of twelve, measure 23 where an ‘Eb’ dominant is spelled with a ‘C#’ for no discernible reason:  Eb-G-Bb-Db(C#).
